Hawk tried move quietly and swiftly threw the snow covered forest. Nerves surged threw him. His mind kept asking "what is is? Who is it?" He tried to stop thinking to himself because he thought it would make him more sly.
Crunch... crunch... crunch his hooves sunk threw the snow. Hawk's blue roan coat stood out amongst the white snow. He knew he didn't have camouflage one his side but he hoped he had speed though. Hours passed but it felt like three life times. Hawk was know at a brisk trot. The freezing air ripped at his coat.
He could soon see the opening in the trees were his herd lived and picked up a lope.Sniffing the air hoping he can catch a sense but to scared to turn around.
As soon as he pushed threw the trees he slid to a stop hoping to see the serenity of his herd. But there was no horse in sight of the snowy valley. Then it hit him like a rock. It was the cowboys and their scavenging dogs. Hawk turned his head to see atleast 5 pairs of eyes and teeth glinting at him....
Chapter two
The flint like eyes Stared him down. He pranced and snorted. Hawk was confused in this situation. He had never been taught how to handle this danger. So he followed his instincts. After prancing a circle Hawk tore off like a low flying jet. He knew the dogs would be following him but he kept running. He plowed threw the deep snow but he was sure the dogs were plowing threw it as well as he was. Hawk felt the blood flow threw his tendons and legs, He was ready to fight and race. Suddenly he felt that blood that was once flowing freeze as he felt a dog snap at his heel.
The dog had latched on! He kicked out his back leg with the dog still attached. Began to buck out and kick his legs in hope the dog would be thrown off before the others could take him down. He then reared up smashing the dogs face under his hooves. Once the dog had released Hawk surged forward once again. Only to be closed line by a thick long rope and a quick slack pull. The cowboys had caught him.

His ears lay to his skull trying to find warmth. He could her the cowboys laughing and drinking. Something caught his eye. A black lump lay across the ground. Hawk began to nicker "Sparow! is that you My son!" Suddnely a happiness filled his heart. Atleast he wouldn't have to follow the cowboys alone.

Soon the were next to the coal black colt the only colt of the herd Hawk's only son. 'Sparrow?" Hawk cried as he saw blood dye the snow red and his son's mangled blck leg had dog bites threw the tendon. He had chunks taken from his eyes and stomache and ribs. Hatred filled in Hawks belly. He flung himself into the cowboy's horse and bit the cowboy's shoulder and hoped it would draw blood.
Hawk then saw one of the dogslay down and chew on his son. He twistesd around adn chased the dog. "Get away from my son he will not die because of you!" He screamed. Trotting up to sparrow he layed down in the freezing cold next to his stif son and cryed.
